Channel Coordination on Exclusive vs. Non-Exclusive Content under Endogenous Consumer Homing
摘要
We analyze competition between two digital platforms selling subscriptions for unlimited access to their content catalogs. An upstream content provider offers additional content and chooses between a per-consumer wholesale price and a non-marginal contract, modeled as revenue sharing. The platforms independently decide whether to buy this additional content, so that exclusive or non-exclusive distribution arises endogenously. With low initial exclusivity, the content provider and both platforms prefer per-consumer wholesale pricing, yielding non-exclusive distribution and full consumer singlehoming. With high initial exclusivity, all parties prefer a non-marginal contract, yielding exclusive distribution and partial multihoming. Allowing contracts contingent on exclusivity does not change these predictions.
