Does Artificial Intelligence Shape Within-Firm Wage Inequality?
摘要
This paper examines the impact of artificial intelligence on within-firm wage inequality using panel data on Chinese A-share listed companies over the period 2007–2023. The analysis shows that the adoption of artificial intelligence significantly narrows wage disparities, primarily by reshaping labor demand—reducing reliance on low-skilled workers while increasing both demand and wages for high-skilled employees. The effect is stronger in non-state-owned firms, firms with greater CEO power, those facing fewer financing constraints, high-tech industries, and regions with higher levels of marketization. By providing firm-level evidence on how artificial intelligence influences compensation structures, the paper contributes to the literature on technology and labor markets, with implications for corporate governance and policies aimed at promoting more inclusive growth.
