We introduce a definition of multivariate majorization that is new to the economics literature. We exploit it to generalize Mussa and Rosen’s (1978) “ironing” to mechanism design problems in which agents’ types are one dimensional but value interdependencies create a multidimensional ironing problem. Our multidimensional ironing technique is constructive, computationally simple, and applies to discrete and continuous type spaces alike. We use it for the optimal design of club goods.
