Predatory Pricing in the Presence of Network Effects: Evidence from the Lab
摘要
Predatory pricing has been an increasing concern in digital platform markets. However, evidence of predatory pricing in laboratory experiments is scarce (‘rare like an old stamp’) if existent at all (‘rare like a unicorn’). We investigate whether network effects – a defining characteristic of many digital platform markets – increase the tendency of firms to engage in predatory pricing, compared to markets without network effects. Moreover, we examine whether markets with network effects are more likely to harbor monopolies and whether the prevalence of collusion is affected by the presence of network effects.
