Profit Margin Protection Program Participation by US Dairy Farmers
摘要
The U.S. dairy farm industry is subject to milk and feed price volatility. The Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program, and its predecessor, the Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP), are federal risk management programs for dairy producers that account for input (feed) and output (milk) prices. Under these programs, farmers receive payments based on the national margin between the U.S. All-Milk price and a national feed cost. We use a fractional logit regression to estimate factors associated with farm DMC/MPP participation. Results indicate that positive expected payouts led to higher participation while the presence of an Amish population decreased participation.
