Skill, preferences, and monotonicity violations with endogenous judgment quality
摘要
‘Judges design’ uses judges’ and other classifiers’ propensities as an instrument to assess the impact of their decisions. Average monotonicity is a condition that is assumed when using this method. I show that this condition can be violated even by judges who are identical in all respects except their preferences. This weakens a common justification offered for assuming monotonicity. The analysis also reveals the impossibility of ranking judges according to their skill based on simple comparisons of their judgment errors.
