The Syrian Civil War led to a mass outflow of refugees. More than one million of them fled to Europe. Did refugees fleeing an origin country with poor economic institutions erode the high-quality economic institutions in destination countries as posited by the “new economic case for immigration restrictions?” We take advantage of the fact that most Syrian refugees settled in only a few European destination countries and use the synthetic control method to create counterfactuals to evaluate the evolution of economic freedom in refugee destination countries against. We do not find robust evidence of a large negative impact on European destination countries’ overall economic freedom; however, we do find some suggestive evidence of a negative effect on Germany and Sweden’s Legal System and Property Rights.
