摘要

We compare the economic and technological measures of contractee and independent hog farms using data from the 2020 USDA Agricultural Resource Management Survey. We use a stochastic production frontier model to estimate technical efficiency, returns to scale of farms, and economic performance of both production systems by state and regions. After controlling for selectivity bias, we find that contracting pushes out the productivity frontier of U.S. hog farms by approximately 23%. Nonetheless, we find that independent hog farms in Iowa and Minnesota are still competitive with their contracting peers in terms of overall technical efficiency and household returns on assets.
