Using Choice Experiment Data to Estimate the Value of a Statistical Species
摘要
Wildlife interactions influence the value of outdoor recreation, but little prior work links welfare to wildlife abundance. We use a choice experiment to estimate willingness to pay for recreation as a function of the probability of seeing a species. Our estimates are analogous to the value of statistical life, so we term them the Òvalue of a statistical speciesÓ (VSS). We provide empirical VSS estimates of common North American species that may be transferable to benefit-cost analyses of comparable recreational settings supporting similar wildlife. We then show how they help assess wildlife management benefits and costs using a case study.
