When Banks Are No Longer Mysterious: Bank Transparency and Efficiency
摘要
This paper examines the impact of bank transparency on bank efficiency. Using the 2014 information disclosure rule for listed banks issued by the China Securities Regulatory Commission as an exogenous shock, we conduct a staggered difference-in-differences analysis using data on Chinese commercial banks from 2008 to 2023. We find that improved bank transparency reduces interest expenses and the cost-to-income ratios on the cost side, while increasing loan interest income, market power, and market share on the income side, thereby enhancing bank efficiency. This positive effect is more pronounced for less efficient banks and those with lower customer deposit ratios, as well as in regions with weaker financial regulation. Transparency also lowers bank risk and liquidity hoarding, with long-lasting efficiency gains. Overall, enhancing bank transparency supports stable and high-quality banking development, with valuable implications for global banking regulation and governance.
